Work experience is more valuable than ever before.

As young people enter one of the most competitive job markets in recent years, meaningful work experience is becoming an essential bridge between education and employment, helping candidates build confidence, practical skills and a clearer sense of career direction.

Strident has been offering work experience to students from a local high school for more than five years. "Work experience students come in up to twice a year from Northgate High School. We have a structured programme that allows them to see how the business is run, the day-to-day tasks that the engineers work on and to shadow an engineer in the work place," explains Chris Joberns, managing director at Strident.

"An opportunity like this gives you a chance to see how a business really works. This is a great experience when applying for jobs, as it helps you understand what employers want," remarked a student on work experience with Strident.

Youth initiatives to fight rising unemployment

Recent ONS figures reported via the House of Commons Library show 729,000 young people aged 16 to 24 were unemployed in January to March 2026, 110,000 more than the previous year, with the youth unemployment rate rising to 16.2% from 14.2%.

Recent UK youth employment initiatives have highlighted the importance of practical experience in helping young people move into sustained work, with national programmes expanding access to work placements and skills training.

“Work experience can be transformational,” said Victoria Calder, Careers Leader at Northgate High School. “It helps students understand what employers expect, discover where their strengths lie and build the confidence to take their next step. For businesses, it is a practical way to develop future talent and strengthen links with the local community. We really appreciate Strident's continued support of our Year 10 work experience programme."

A worthwhile investment

Chris believes the return on its investment is clear. "It's a simple commitment for us, but it can make a real difference to a young person figuring out their next step. If we can give a handful of students each year greater confidence in their next interview, or a clearer idea of what they actually want to do, then the investment is worthwhile."

With youth unemployment at its highest level in over a decade, partnerships like this are essential and Strident has no plans to stop, with two more intakes already planned. The personal and societal benefits of meaningful employment for young people are huge and hopefully programmes like this, however small, can make a positive impact.
