Strengthened leadership accountability - Senior management now required to demonstrate active responsibility for resource conservation, ecosystem protection, and long-term sustainability. This elevation of expectations moves environmental management from operational consideration to strategic priority.

New control 6.3 planning for changes - Ensures businesses evaluate environmental impacts before implementing changes to facilities or operations, ensuring that environmental considerations are integrated into decision-making from the outset rather than addressed reactively.

Mandatory lifecycle perspective - Now a mandatory requirement, businesses must actively apply lifecycle perspectives across their operations, examining environmental impacts from raw material extraction through product end-of-life. This shift moves beyond acknowledgment to practical implementation.

Expanded scope of external processes - Clause 8.1 now encompasses all externally provided processes, evaluating and managing the environmental performance of their entire supply chain and external partnerships, regardless of contractual arrangements. Organisations must show environmental monitoring across all external inputs that affect their environmental management system.

Comprehensive context assessment - Your business context evaluation must now explicitly include climate change, biodiversity loss, and lifecycle impacts.
